The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says a drug company is “reviewing the drug safety database” to determine whether a particular product is covered under the Affordable Care Act.
“In many cases, the FDA does not approve a drug, and the drug manufacturer’s decision may not be based on clinical evidence,” the agency wrote in its latest ruling.
Last year, the FDA warned that Viagra, the erectile dysfunction drug, could be used to treat a range of ailments, including arthritis.
Viagra is a prescription drug, not a health benefit. The agency said it would require the drug to be covered under the drug benefit.
But it did not give a reason for the decision.
The FDA has long said that the drug is not covered under the drug benefit. The agency said it is reviewing the drug’s drug safety database.
In a statement, the FDA said the company was reviewing the data to determine whether it was a drug company and would make an “informed decision” to approve Viagra.
“We believe that this new review of the data is a reasonable and efficient way for the agency to ensure that this new information is correct,” FDA spokeswoman Karenueblo said in an emailed statement.
Viagra was approved for treating erectile dysfunction and is the only drug approved for that purpose.
The agency also said the FDA has asked for the company to share more detailed information about its medical history, including the dosage of the drug.
It has not yet confirmed that the company is aware of all the drugs on the market. In an e-mail response, FDA spokesperson Lindsay Welch said the company had not disclosed the full drug list or the full list of active ingredients.
The agency said it is reviewing the drug list and has not given any reasons for the decision to approve Viagra.
“We are having difficulty, however,” said Michael Lechleiter, the FDA’s medical director for drug safety. “This new review of the data is a reasonable and efficient way to ensure that the agency follows its instructions and protects patients and physicians.”
The FDA issued a public health warning in March regarding an increase in the number of women who use Viagra.
The drug is approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra’s maker, Pfizer, says it has not yet received any reports of adverse events related to the drug’s use.
In a statement, Pfizer said it is aware of the situation and would be reviewing the FDA’s response.
“Pfizer is aware of our ongoing and serious safety concerns and the need for additional information,” said Dan Solas, Pfizer’s president. “Pfizer continues to work with patients and health care providers to ensure that this important new information is accurate and is used as a basis for clinical judgment.”
Drugs covered under the Affordable Care Act, known as copay cards, are eligible for copay cards. The copay card program has been used by several companies in the pharmaceutical industry, including Merck, Schering-Plough, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Teva.The company said it would make an informed decision as soon as possible.
